Your First Rock Beat

Build the most common beat in modern music: bass drum on beats 1 and 3, snare on beats 2 and 4, and steady eighth notes on the hi-hat.

Lesson Notes

Three components: hi-hat plays eighth notes on every count, bass drum plays on beats 1 and 3, snare plays on beats 2 and 4. Learn one limb at a time before combining them. Never rush to add the next limb - building each layer individually is what makes the combination feel natural.

Practice Assignment

Set metronome to 60 BPM. Practice hi-hat eighth notes only for 3 minutes while counting aloud. Add bass drum on 1 and 3 for 3 minutes. Add snare on 2 and 4 for 5 minutes. When you can play the full beat for 3 consecutive minutes without stopping, move to 70 BPM.
